CULTURAL AND GASTRONOMIC ROUTES IN GIRONA - BAIX EMPORDÀ |
The inland villages of the comarca of Baix Empordà remind us of the elegance of Tuscany, while its coastline is famous for its pine-covered cliffs interrupted only by small coves.
Villages such as Pals and Peratallada reveal the majesty of medieval Catalonia and even today the Costa Brava still hides many secrets of great unexpected beauty.
La Bisbal, the ‘county town’, is well known for its ceramics and pottery.
Due to its cork production, Palafrugell is of great importance in the wine-producing world. Its nearby beaches are some of the most beautiful on the whole Costa Brava, while coastal villages such as Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu are also a must for visitors.
Palamós is the main port on the Costa Brava and its fish market a delight for the senses. The town’s Fisheries Museum reminds us how local people lived before the arrival of mass tourism.
Inland we find Calonge and Vall-Llobrega, where the wines of the Baix Empordà are produced. Well-bodied red grape varieties here include Samsó, Lledoner, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Monastrel, Ull de llebre and Sirah.
