The Pla de l’Estany lies in the heart of Girona province. Its flat agricultural lands are a continuation of the Alt Empordà and are watered by underground waters from the Alta Garrotxa, which upwell to form the large Lake of Banyoles. This lake is the most characteristic element of the comarca and gives it its name.
Its agricultural production is based on wheat, rye, oats, millet, legumes, garlic and oil, as well as maize, barley, beans (including broad beans), chick-peas, peas and haricot beans. Local restaurateurs use these local products in their dishes and celebrate their gastronomic creations with the slogan ‘the pleasure of eating naturally’. The proximity of the sea means that shellfish and cod are present in local cooking, blending to perfection with local peas, turnips, salsify, various types of omelettes and poultry. Oils, cheeses and honey are also ever-present on local tables, as is the beef that comes from the recently re-established local beef production.
One of the most effective ways of bring the fruits of the earth to the attention of the consumer are local gastronomic shows; in Pla de l’Estany these include events such as the Honey Show in Crespià, the Garlic Show in Cornellà de Terri and the Cheese Show in Esponellà.
