The comarca of La Selva is very geographically diverse and consists of three very different zones – the lowland plains, the mountain and the coast. Each zone has its own characteristic gastronomy, based on local products and adapted to the seasons and cultural traditions.
The towns of Blanes, Lloret and Tossa are home to a cuisine influenced by the proximity of the sea, boasting mar i muntanya dishes (as in the Alt Empordà) and succulent combinations of seafood and products from the hinterland. In the mountains of the Montseny-Guilleries, we find ox, beef and wild-boar stews, and a great variety of dishes delighting in the excellencies of the local wild mushrooms. The restaurants in Arbúcies, Sant Hilari de Sacalm, Osor, Anglès and La Cellera are wonderful examples.
The lowlands provide interesting recipes based on carefully chosen blends of vegetables and rice.
La Selva also offers the visitor the chance to attend gastronomic shows and fairs throughout the whole year: the pig slaughter at La Cellera, the Wild-boar Show at Osor, the ‘Ranxo’ at Vidreres, and many more ... all connected with eating and drinking well. The capital of the comarca, Santa Coloma de Farners, is home to producers of ratafia, a liquor made from a blend of herbs and walnuts, and all the other villages specialise in a particular type of cake or biscuits.
